What is NDVI? 

The NDVI Index is a measurement tool that assesses the level of greenness and vegetation density for every pixel in a satellite image. It calculates the difference between the visible light in the red band and the near-infrared light reflected by vegetation, generating a value between 0 and 1. The higher the value, the greater the vigor and health of the vegetation. 

  • Values close to 1: Represent dense and healthy vegetation, such as forests or well-maintained parks. 
  • Values close to 0: Indicate sparse vegetation, bare soil, or urban areas with minimal vegetation cover. 

NDVI provides a reliable and quantifiable view of the vegetation in a given area, and its application in urban management offers a wealth of valuable data for sustainable planning and development.

This dataset enables a clear assessment of the city’s green areas and their condition. It also facilitates the identification of densely urbanized areas with the need of parks and green areas. 

In addition to the immediate analysis, the archive datasets allow us to observe how the city is developing and evolving in terms of green areas in the city towards the ambitious sustainability targets.
